This week, CNNMoney posted their annual Fortune 500 rankings for 2013. These rankings are for US public companies and these 500 firms are included in the broader Global 5000 database.

As has been the case over the past few years, Wal-Mart and Exxon Mobil were #1 and #2.  Both GM and Ford were in the top 10.  This year, Apple and Berkshire Hathaway were in the top 10.

One way to get a measure of US public company growth is to take a look at #500 on the list each year and see what revenue level it took to make it to #500.  Last year, Molina Healthcare was #500 with $4.769 billion in revenue. This year, Nash Finch was #500 with $4.820 billion —-that #500 spot grew only 1.1% from year to year. Mirroring the sluggish economic growth the US witnessed.

Relating this US list to the broader global market, the #500 firm in the US ranks 1,795 place in the broader Global 5000 list of companies
