We are currently working on an expansion of the overall transportation industry. In the Global economy, transportation spans multiple industry codes and groups that all seem to be experiencing major fundamental shifts.
The impact of COVID upended the airline passenger travel business which is just now bouncing back – it also caused havoc with shipping of goods and the logistics challenges seen around the world in the past few years. Add into that mix the push to electric vehicles, battery technology and chip shortages affecting the auto industry and we have a multi-faceted dynamic affecting a wide swath of companies and industry segments.
From the perspective of tracking activity among the Global 5000 players, we are working to build out a view that encompasses the following:
- The movement of all people & goods
- Companies that provide services to support that movement
- Companies that build products to transport people and goods
In essence, we should be looking at everything from Uber to Norwegian to Delta Airlines to Tesla & XPO Logistics.
If it moves people or goods we should look at it. If a company builds a product involved in moving people and goods, they should be included.
To that end – The Global 5000 currently has 482 companies involved in this broad transportation picture.
The largest are the auto makers – Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes, etc
We believe we should be watching & tracking many more – so we are embarking on an effort to build the Transportation 1000 — the 1000 largest transportation companies in the world.
Currently we have identified over 600 that fit into this view and we are working to build out the database just like the Global 5000.
As always, we appreciate your input and suggestions.
