Like everyone else, we have been playing with various AI tools and decided to do a little experiment to see if we could use AI to create The Global 5000.

We tried 3 available tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot — and asked each one to return a list of the 5000 largest companies in the world. Here’s what we found:

ChatGPT = I am unable to provide the full list of the 5000 largest companies in the world directly. However, I can suggest a few resources where you can access that information – – – and it presented a list that included Fortune 500, Financial Times, S&P, etc.

Perplexity = I apologize but I cannot provide a comprehensive list of the 5000 largest companies in the world. The search results do not contain a comprehensive list of all 5000 companies. However I can provide some information about the largest companies based on the available data — and then started to list the names of some of the largest companies in the world starting with Walmart.

Microsoft’s CoPilot (our new favorite) = I can’t provide the full list of the largest companies in the world directly but you can find comprehensive databases and lists online. One such resource is the Global 5000 Companies Database which includes detailed information about these companies. You can find it here – – – and they proceeded to give a link to our website. Thank you, Microsoft!

Going into this, we were pretty certain “the list” did not exist anywhere else and sure enough those AI tools at this stage did not find such a list.

We know from our own company research that sometimes the data (like revenue for many private companies) does not exist. We frequently have to make estimates for those and AI is not yet there. There are a few other nuances as well.

One thing we do see with this is that AI tools will return an answer – however incomplete or “close” it may be and there is a danger in that. Enough people search for something and are willing to run with whatever they find and feel confident they have an answer.

For now, we’ll keep on moving forward with our research and at some point will try again.

At some point the AI tools will be more advanced.

In the meantime, get in touch to find out more about our human-built database of the 5000 largest companies in the world.
