Each year, Fortune magazine has published a list of the 500 largest public companies in the world. We match this list to our Global 5000 and show the rank of the 500. Looking back 5 years on this same list, it is amazing to see the impact that the growth of China has had on markets across the board. Take a look at the following:
- In 2008, there were 34 of the top 500 companies in China. By 2012, that number grew to 86
- In 2008, Europe was represented by 188 companies and now that is down to 151
- Between 2008 and 2012, revenue for the largest 500 companies grew 19.5%. Revenue coming from China based companies grew 203%
- Revenue from China accounted for 6.3% of the total for the top 500 in 2008. That gre to 16.1% in 2012
We have all heard and read about the size and growth of the China economy. Figures like these really drive the point home.
Those companies that continue to sell primarily to US and European markets will likely miss the major global growth trends
