We regularly get questions asking if we match up to and include the Fortune 5000 in our Global 5000 database.
There is no Fortune 5000.
Fortune produces the well known and long standing Fortune 500 list of the top US companies. That has been expanded to 1000 firms which are public and US based. Fortune also publishes a number of other lists like the Global 500, a European version, an Asia version and others. In all those cases, they are public companies.
Forbes produces an annual list of the top US private companies. The most recent addition had just over 200 private US companies that had revenue over $2 billion. Forbes also produces the Forbes Global 2000 which are 2,000 public companies from around the world. They are ranked on a Forbes-built model that takes into consideration, revenue, market cap and profits.
When those various lists are published (as well as others), we do review them and compare them to the Global 5000 to make sure we haven’t missed any. We also look for other “top company” lists that are often published by various industry cuts and lists published by country or region.
