Auto manufacturers are in the middle of a whirlwind of a number of environmental, governmental, and market forces the likes of which we have not seen before.
Just look at the items grabbing the headlines and news cycles the past month or so:
- The change of administration in the US has put the whole EV initiative into question
- A merger (or not) of two or more of Japan’s major manufacturers (Nissan – Honda – Mitsubishi) was on then off and now discussed again
- Tarriffs may be coming (or not)
- Volkswagen considering closing a plant in home country Germany
- The Chinese (and BYD) continue to push and claim to be years ahead of everybody
- Tesla’s growth has slowed to 1% and its leader appears to be focused elsewhere
- This week, EV maker Nikola went out of business
Try navigating all those waters. Good luck to all who sell into these markets — and good luck to the millions who are employed in related businesses depending on the industry.
As we sit here today, here are the 10 largest auto manufacturing companies (by revenue) in the world. We’ll continue to watch and see what changes take place.
- Volkswagen AG
- Toyota Motor Corporation
- Stellantis N.V.
- Ford Motor Company
- General Motors Company
- BMW AG
- Mercedes Benz Group AG
- Honda Motor Co., Ltd
- Hyundai Motor Co.
- SAIC Motor Corporation Limited
One interesting side note on Nikola (and a reason we focus on revenue to determine who makes The Global 5000). At one point, Nikola had a market cap larger than GM – but the revenue never came.
Makes it important to pay attention to which stars you are chasing.
